Federal Prison: Federal Bureau of Prisons – Are changes coming for Federal Prison Inmates with mental health problems?

by | Sep 30, 2013 | Federal Prison, Federal Prison Inmates with mental health problems |

The mentally ill federal prison inmates  in federal prison is a serious problem for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and an even worse problem for a mentally ill federal prison inmate because of lack of treatment and help for federal prison inmates.  Attorney General Eric Holder gave a wide ranging speech in August 2012 but did not specifically mention the mentally ill federal prison inmate population in his reforms or those federal prison inmates with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health treatment needs.

The Attorney General did say when referring to nonviolent federal prison offenders, they would go through a careful review process by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to determine whether release is warranted and referred to it as “the fair thing to do.”  The impact of federal prison policy changes in the Federal Bureau of Prisons will take months if not years to determine their full effect.
