Earlier this year the Department of Justice Inspector General released a highly critical report on the Federal Bureau of Prisons Compassionate Release Process.  What investigators found was a Federal Prison Inmate Compassionate Release Process that was full of delays and bureaucratic red tape.  The Federal Prison Inmate Compassionate Release was without compassion and Federal Prison Inmates often died while awaiting a decision.

Federal Prison: Federal Bureau of Prisons – Are changes coming for first-time non-violent Federal Prison Inmates?

In an historical speech to the American Bar Association, Attorney General Eric Holder announced revised procedures and criteria for Federal Prison Inmates seeking reduced federal prison sentences.  The Attorney General singled out elderly federal prison inmates and federal prison inmates that are the only possible caregiver for their dependents who did not commit violent federal crimes and have served significant portions of their federal prison sentence.

A Dramatic Change Ahead in Federal Prison Policy?

A Change in the Federal Bureau of Prisons Compassionate Release Policy?

In April 2013, the Department of Justice Inspector General released a scathing report criticizing the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Compassionate Release Policy calling it “poorly managed and implemented inconsistently, likely resulting in eligible (federal prison) inmates not being considered for release and in terminally ill (federal prison) inmates dying before their requests were decided”   and made 11 recommendations for improvement.  The same month Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Director Charles Samuels updated the Compassionate Release Program Statement.
