A Change in the Federal Bureau of Prisons Compassionate Release Policy?

by | Jul 12, 2013 | Uncategorized |

In April 2013, the Department of Justice Inspector General released a scathing report criticizing the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Compassionate Release Policy calling it “poorly managed and implemented inconsistently, likely resulting in eligible (federal prison) inmates not being considered for release and in terminally ill (federal prison) inmates dying before their requests were decided”   and made 11 recommendations for improvement.  The same month Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Director Charles Samuels updated the Compassionate Release Program Statement.

In June, Federal Prison Consultants, a division of Justice Solutions of America, Inc. was retained by a family whose loved one, a federal prison inmate, had been previously denied for a Compassionate Release.  In July 2013, this now former federal prison inmate and our client was approved and he is at home with his family.

We are hopeful this series of events is an indication that the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is taking a fresh look at their Compassionate Release policies for federal prison inmates and putting in place the recommendations of the Inspector General.  If you have any questions about whether your incarcerated loved one is eligible for a federal prison Compassionate Release, please contact Federal Prison Consultants for your free consultation.
